Team Dead Weight's goal was to raise awareness about the dangers of lead wheel weights in vehicles, and to gather data that could be used to help phase out this hazardous material in the tire industry. Team Dead Weight presented to community leaders, state legislators, and environmentalists at the United Nations. They were invited to make presentations to EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson and the Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. The city and school districts were convinced; they agreed to phase out lead wheel weights in vehicles owned by the city and school districts. In addition, the students teamed up with legislators to craft House File 785 proposing to phase out the lead in wheel weights. Michael Wichman, University Hygienic Laboratory Associate Director Environmental Health Programs, was instrumental in helping the students with their experiments. The compelling data was used by The Ecology Center and other organizations that convinced the U.S. EPA to phase-out the use of lead wheel weights and begin rule making to implement the phase out of lead in wheel weights.
